WEDA's Dredging 201 Short Course
Strategies and Methods for Successful Contaminated Sediment Remediation
Fees: $150 for all participants
The Western Dredging Association (WEDA) is a professional organization connecting individuals, companies, other organizations, and individuals interested in the field of dredging within North, South & Central America.
When: Where: | General Course Overview: Contaminated sediment sites are notoriously heterogeneous, often encompassing a wide variety of environments and site conditions. Shallow water, deep water, urban, rural, wetlands, spawning beds, vegetated flats, navigation channels, piers, docks, and every other aquatic feature within the waterway are all potentially impacted to varying degrees. Developing an effective remedial plan that is implementable, affordable, and applicable to all areas is challenging. Site characterization uncertainties complicate matters further. This course, sponsored by the Western Dredging Association (WEDA), will present fundamentals of contaminated waterways remediation, including site characterization, remedial strategies, and post-construction monitoring. |
The basics of natural recovery, enhanced natural recovery, environmental dredging, and capping as remedial strategies will be discussed, including Best Management Practices (BMPs) for residuals management, cap placement, sediment management, and other real-world construction considerations. The course will focus on developing constructible remedial strategies across a wide array of environments that provide long-term risk reduction. A model contaminated sediment site will be used to illustrate how different remedial strategies can be sewn together to reduce site-wide risk. This course has been developed to support anyone that wants to understand better the fundamentals of sediment remediation, including engineers, consultants, owners, regulators, and community groups. PDH's Who Should Attend?
About the Instructor: Dr. Don Hayes will present the Dredging 101 course. Dr. Hayes worked as a Research Environmental Engineer at the U.S. Army Engineering Research and Development Center from 1978-1991, then again from July 2018 - October 2021, when he retired. Between 1991 and 2018, he held multiple academic appointments, including Chair of the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering and Construction at the University of Nevada Las Vegas and Director of the Institute for Coastal Ecology & Engineering at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. Dr. Hayes earned BS and MS degrees in Civil Engineering from Mississippi State University in Civil Engineering and a PhD from Colorado State University in Environmental Engineering/Water Resources Planning & Management. Dr. Hayes is a member of the WEDA Board of Directors and a member of the WEDA Environmental Commission. He is a licensed professional engineer in 3 states (LA, MS, NV), a Diplomate of the American Academy of Environmental Engineers and Scientists, and a Fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers. Dr. Hayes currently provides consulting and educational services related to environmental aspects of dredging, dredged material management, and beneficial use through The Dredging Professor LLC. Registration: The Dredging 101 course can be added to your registration or purchased separately. Attendance at the meeting is not mandatory to participate in the course.
