Thank you for taking the time to read the May edition of the newsletter and for your support of the Western Dredging Association. We are looking forward to seeing everyone at the upcoming Dredging Summit & Expo in Vancouver next month and have a few pre-conference tips to share:
  • Registration
    • If you haven't already registered and made plans to attend, now is certainly the time to do so, CLICK HERE for online registration. If you need assistance, email info@westerndredging.org or call us at (949) 422-8231.
  • Hotel Reservations
    • The last day to make hotel reservations and utilize the WEDA Group rates is Monday June 5th, As of May 30th, only double/double rooms are available at the WEDA group rate. If the hotel is sold out for the nights that you request, the Fairmont Hotel located across the street at 900 West Georgia Street is a great alternative hotel. CLICK HERE to reserve a room at the Hyatt online. All rates are quoted in Canadian Dollars
  • Short Courses
    • Monday June 26th from 8 to noon - Slurry Transport (updated with the latest developments)

    • The technical schedule is now available on the WEDA Mobile Application and can be viewed on the conference website by clicking here.   • Guest Speaker at the Luncheon on Tuesday June 27th
    • Make sure to attend the luncheon on Tuesday as we welcome Mr. Cliff Stewart, the Vice President of Infrastructure at the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority. To read his full bio, CLICK HERE
  • Transportation to/from Hyatt
  • Post Conference Tour & Lunch
    • For those of you that are staying the night on Thursday, make sure that you don't miss the Post Conference Tour & Lunch on-board the 110' Magic Charm. Buses will depart the Hyatt at 12:45 and return around 4:30, The cost is $25 per person and space is limited. To register for the tour and lunch, CLICK HERE.

Please be advised that WEDA's 2017 Annual Membership Meeting will be conducted at the Hyatt Regency in Vancouver, BC, Canada on June 27, 2017. The membership meeting will occur during the conference luncheon on Tuesday, immediately following the address by the Vancouver Port Authority speaker, Mr. Cliff Stewart.

The meeting agenda will include the annual address by the WEDA President Marcel Hermans covering regular WEDA business, financial and membership updates, committee reports, and a summary of key initiatives. We want all WEDA members to attend and participate during this meeting and look forward to seeing you there..

Dredging Summit & Expo '17 - Vancouver, BC
The 2017 Dredging Summit & Expo is only 4 weeks away and there's still time to make plans and attend this most beneficial dredging conference. is year's conference will feature 60 technical presentations, 50+ exhibitors and plenty of opportunities to network at the various social activities and functions we have planned throughout the week. Pacific Chapter Meeting - Portland, OR 
The Pacific Chapter Board is pleased to announce that their 2017 conference will be held at the Embassy Suites in Portland, OR from Wednesday October 25th to Friday October 27th, 2017. If you are interested in presenting at this meeting, please submit an abstract to Jarod Norton at programdirector@pacificweda.org. WEDA is a non-profit organization which is governed by a Board of Directors. Each month we list the profile of one of WEDA's Directors. We hope this will help everyone get more familiar with the people behind our organization, make it easier for you to reach out to any of them when you want to, and in general to enhance our connections within WEDA.

This month's spotlight is on: Nelson Sanchez

Nelson Sanchez is currently the Assistant Chief of Operations Division, Mobile District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, which he assist the Chief of Operations to manage over $170M worth of Operations and Maintenance services for Navigation, Hydropower, Natural Resources, Emergency Management, Flood Control and Environmental Stewardship for the States of Georgia, Mississippi, Alabama and the pan handle of Florida. He graduated in 1985 from Michigan State University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering.

Nelson began his career with the Corps of Engineers, Detroit District, in 1985, He served as a Civil Engineer in Construction Division before transferring to Mobile District in 1991 into the Operations Division. Nelson has played a vital role in the District's navigation program, serving as Chief of the Navigation and Chief of Coastal Management Branch were after Hurricane Katrina he partnered with the US Coast Guard and Gulf Intracoastal Canal Association to develop a successful Hurricane Protocol that has been used as a model for other navigation recovery efforts after an hurricane disaster. In 2011 he was the Recovery Field Office Commander leading over 450 team members to perform recovery efforts in the aftermath of the devastating Tornados in Alabama on April 27, 2011 where they removed over 5M cubic yard of debris within 100 days.

Among Nelson's awards and recognition are Planning Team of the Year Award, South Atlantic Division Winner, 1998; South Atlantic Division Outstanding Planning Achievement Award for 2004; Commander's Awards for Civilian Service, 1999, 2000 and 2002; and Superior Civilian Service Award 2005, the 2006 HENNAC Civil Engineer Distinction Awarded and Commander's Awards for Civilian Service 2011.

This month's company spotlight is on CARYLON SEDIMENTS GROUP

The CARYLON SEDIMENTS GROUP is a recognized leader in sediment, waste and ash management services throughout North America and the Caribbean regions. The Carylon companies have been providing environmental services to government and private clients for over 65 years.

The Carylon Sediments Group consists of three Carylon Companies operating from four strategic locations in Chester, PA; Columbus, OH; Charlotte, NC; and Long Beach, CA, These companies are Bio-Nomic Services Inc., Metropolitan Environmental Services Inc., and Mobile Dredging and Video Pipe Inc. The Carylon Sediments Group has completed dredging projects from Nova Scotia to Southern California and the Eastern Caribbean to Mexico dating back to the 1960's.

The Carylon Sediments Group provides turnkey sediment and ash remediation services and has significant experience with environmental dredging, sediment dewatering and excavation, and placement of environmental capping materials. The Carylon Sediments Group owns and operates dredges, pumps, work barges, tanks, high volume hydro-cyclone and rapid dewatering screen systems, belt filter presses, recessed chamber filter presses, centrifuges, clarifiers, and specialized and conventional excavation equipment. This equipment has been used on high profile projects for removal and treatment of sediments and sludge in lakes, rivers, lagoons, waste pits, abandoned landfills, mine sites, marine sites, tidal marshes and ash sites. Our experienced team has assisted clients and engineering firms with design, development, and completion of difficult environmental remediation projects throughout North America and the Caribbean.

Recent significant projects include the dredging, mechanical dewatering and reuse/disposal of sediments for the NJDOT at Shark River Inlet, Montgomery County MD DEP Lake Whetstone and Gunners Lake, and an annual contract for management and dewatering of approximately one million cubic yards per year of ash at a power plant in the Southeast.
